The Show
With Halloween just around the corner it was an evening of spookiness here at the Moonbase this week. Wooooooooo....
The Music
1. Quiet Village - Circus Of Horror (Silent Movie, 2008)
2. John Buzon Trio (Mr Ghost Goes to Town, Inferno!/Organs in Orbit)
3. Perrey & Kingsley - Spooks in Space (The In Sound From Way Out)
4. Esquivel - Lazy Bones (Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, 1994)
We took a brief rest from THE TERROR to bring you another track by this wonderful Japanese duo called Lullatone. This one comes from their latest album:
5. Lullatone - Tiny Cinema (The Bedtime Beat, 2008)
Then it was straight back into horror mode with another new track, this time from the Moon Wiring Club:
6. Moon Wiring Club - Form The Circle (Shoes Off And Chairs Away, 2008)
And then the first of two tracks from a great new CD which is more like reference material than a regular album as it consists of 20 tracks recorded on 20 different analogue systems, one for each year consecutively from 1968 to 1987!
7 Benge - 1970 ARP 2500 (Twenty Systems, 2008)
And another new track, this one from the recent compilation of tracks by the Man From Uranus recorded over the last 4 years:
8. Man From Uranus - Watch Out For The Giant Pickle - Amazing Science Friction Volume One, 2008)
Then a track from someone we really ought to feature more on the show, the wonderful Ms People Like Us:
9. People Like Us - OB & Cha Cha (Beware The Whim Reaper, 1996)
10. Lew Davies - Ghost Riders in the Sky (Strange Interlude, 1961)
11. The Three Suns - Danny's Inferno (Movin' and Groovin', 1961)
12. Reg Tilsley - Old Devil Moon - When Lights Are Low, 1973)
13. Eric Framond - Bacchanale Chez Satan - Top Timing!)
Then we skipped forward 15 years from the first of our tracks from the new Benge album to bring you the sound of 1985:
14. Benge - 1985 Yamaha CX5m (Twenty Systems, 2008)
More spookiness followed:
15. Belbury Poly - The Willows (The Willows, 2004)
16. Padded Cell - Night Must Fall (Night Must Fall, 2008)
17. The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra - The Bells Of Doom (Theme From Hells Kitchen) (Tvpopmuzik, 2007)
18. Korla Pandit - Trance Dance (Exotica 2000)
And we closed with a track we alluded to on last week's show. As listeners may recall, last week we paid tribute to Neal Hefti and I mentioned that his track Jervis (from the Batman soundtrack) had been sampled by someone. Well, it took me a while to remember who it was(!) but I got there in the end so we closed the show with it:
19. Roudoudou - Inna slow tempo (Tout l'univers - 1999)

The Show
FEATURED ARTIST: Neal Hefti
This evening we celebrated the life and work of the great Neal Hefti who sadly left us this week. Most famous for composing the theme to the original Batman TV series, Hefti was responsible for composing many other fine soundtracks and we dipped into some of these on the show this evening.
The Music
1. The Herbaliser - Goldrush (Very Mercenary, 1999)
2. Yusef Lateef - Eastern Market Eastern & Hip 1969)
Following the news that Ringo Starr has had enough of fan mail, it gave us the ideal opportunity to once again play you what might have happened if Ringo Starr had got the gig to compose the theme to Goldfinger:
3. Peter Serafinowicz/Matt Berry - Goldfingo
4. Henry Mancini & His Orchestra - Here's Looking At You Kid (The Pink Panther OST, 2005)
Then it was time to kick off the tribute to Neal Hefti with a "version" of the Batman theme and a Batman-inspired tune by arch-twangers The Ventures:
5. Sun Ra and the Blues Project - Batman Theme (Batman and Robin, 1966)
6. The Ventures - Zocko! (Batman Theme & TV Themes)
And then a track from the man himself from one of the first movies for which he composed the soundtrack:
7. Neal Hefti - Vikki (Boeing Boeing OST, 1965)
8. Gillian Hills - Ne Crois Surtout Pas (Vue Intégrale, (1961)
MC Zirconium brought to our attention a wonderful video on YouTube of the "Kazookelele" which has to be seen to be believed. We played an excerpt on the show:
9. Pockets - The Final Countdown (on Kazookelele)
Followed by another track from the great new album by the Moon Wiring Club:
10. Moon Wiring Club - Bewitching Cattle (Shoes Off And Chairs Away, 2008)
Another band brought to our attention by MC Zirconium is the wonderful Japanese duo Lullatone who make music from toy instruments and instruments they construct themselves:
11. Lullatone - bushman's samba
12. Johnny Hawksworth - The Whistler (Luke Vibert's Further Nuggets, 2002)
Time for more from this week's featured artist:
13. Neal Hefti - Jervis (Batman Theme & 11 Hefti Bat Songs / Hefti in Gotham City, 1966)
14. Neal Hefti - Metropole (The Odd Couple OST, 1968)
Our London correspondent, Jeff, informed us of the new Stereolab tour single so we played it on the show - could this be a UK radio exclusive?
15. Stereolab - Explosante Fixe (2008 Tour Single, 2008)
Stereolab are on tour at the moment, coming to Glasgow on 16 December. Get your tickets here.
A great documentary has been airing on BBC Four telling the life story of living legend, Les Paul, who still plays a set at the Iridium club in New York City every Monday night. And he's in his 90s!
16. Les Paul - Caravan (The Very Best of Les Paul & Mary Ford 1950/2008)
Two very hard to find CD reissues (yes, hard-to-find *reissues*) which have been out of print for a few years are getting a welcome re-pressing in this, the 50th anniversary year of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop:
17. John Baker - Quiz Time (BBC Radiophonic Music, 1968/2008)
Nearing the end of the show, it was time to play some more by our featured artist this week, the recently departed legend Mr Neal Hefti:
18. Neal Hefti - Bathtub / Saturday Night (Harlow OST, 1965)
19. Neal Hefti - This is Mother (Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet & I'm Feelin' So Sad OST, 1967)
Next up a track from the recent reissue of some great Keith Mansfield tunes:
19. Keith Mansfield - Soul Thing (All You Need Is ...)
And we closed the show with a version of one of Neal Hefti's most loved theme tunes, namely The Odd Couple:
20. The Button Down Brass Band - The Odd Couple (This Is Easy)
We will miss you, sir...

The Show
Today was either the 76th or 80th birthday of one of our heroes, John Gregory (aka Johnny Gregory, aka Chaquito) - depending on which internet source you believe...! In any case, we took the opportunity to play a few tracks by the great man. We also dipped into the wonderful new album by the Moon Wiring Club and of course we simply had to play another track from Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman's new album, Destination Space.
The Music
We kicked things off with some groovy Now Sounding library music:
1. Al Newman - Five Plus Four (Music for Dancefloors: The Cream of the Chappell Music Library Sessions, 2001)
And that was followed by an arrangement of delicious tune written by the great Gary McFarland:
2. Benny Golson - Fried Bananas (Tune In, Turn On The Hippest Commercials Of The Sixties, 1999)
Then it was time for the first of this evening's tracks by John Gregory:
3. Chaquito - The Private Ay Ay Ay (Latin Favourites, 1960)
Followed by another spy tune:
4. Dick Hyman - The Third Man Theme (The Man From O.R.G.A.N., 1965)
The Man From Uranus is a Cambridge-based musician who until recently was doing a radio show on a local community radio station. But now he's given that up in favour of making his own music. He has a new collection of tracks out which we will hopefully be dipping into on next week's show. But in the meantime, here's a track from an earlier release of his:
5. Man from Uranus - Chased Down the Alley By a Hammerhead Shark (Future Focus, 2006)
Keeping things electronic, here's another standout track from the new Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman album:
6. Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman - Barn Dance on Saturn (Destination Space, 2008)
Then it was time for our first selection this evening from the new Moon Wiring Club album:
7. Moon Wiring Club - Midnight Moulding (Shoes Off And Chairs Away, 2008)
Next up we played a track by the wonderful Finnish band who provide our theme tune (which is called Diamond Pyramid by the way):
8. Aaviko - Homo Futurus (Back From The Futer, 2005)
Following the story about the "Our National Debt" display (see below) we felt it appropriate to play some educational music on the subject of managing one's finances:
9. Bob Dorough & Val Hawk - Dollars And Sense (Schoolhouse Rock, 1973)
Then it was back to our birthday boy for an original composition and one of the finest things John Gregory has recorded:
10. John Gregory - A Face In The Clouds (Gregory Conducts, 1972)
For the next track we returned to the recent reissue of Keith Mansfield's All You Need Is... which features several tracks by trumpeter extraordinaire Maynard Ferguson (Mansfield was one of MF's producers):
11. Maynard Ferguson - Spinning Wheel (All You Need Is Keith Mansfield 1972/2008)
Time for some space disco next with a track from a great compilation of electronic library music from the mid-70s through into the mid-80s:
12. Brian Bennett - Cloning (Alexis Le-Tan & Jess Present Space Oddities, 2008)
And then a double bill of magic starting with another track from the new Moon Wiring Club album:
13. Moon Wiring Club - House And Garden Magic (Shoes Off And Chairs Away, 2008)
14. The Advisory Circle - Hocusing For Beginners (Other Channels, 2008)
The Advisory Circle are one of several great bands on the Ghost Box label. And Ghost Box have described the new Moon Wiring Club album as "a masterpiece". Quite an accolade...
Another contemporary artiste we love at the Moonbase is Cornelius and he has recently released a DVD edition of his most recent album Sensuous which contains amazing videos for each track on the album.
So we took the opportunity to play one of our favourite Cornelius tunes:
15. Cornelius - Brazil (Point, 2001)
Seeing as Johnny Gregory/Chaquito recorded one of the best ever versions of Caravan how could we not play it on the man's birthday:
16. Chaquito - Caravan (Spotlight on Chaquito)
We closed the show with a track that our London correspondent Jeff brought to our attention:
17. Momotte and Laetitia Sadier - J'ai peur de la voiture (single, 2008)

The Show
On this week's show we had the second and final part of our recent interview with our hero Jean-Jacques Perrey and his current musical partner Dana Countryman o the subject of their new album, Destination Space. We also played tracks from the wonderful new Squarepusher album Just A Souvenir as well as tracks from some great new reissues.
The Music
We kicked things off with tracks from three great reissues that have recently appeared on various subsidiary labels of Cherry Red:
1. The Keith Mansfield Orchestra - Soul Confusion (All You Need Is Keith Mansfield, 1968)
2. Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends - Always You (Full Circle)
3. Gary McFarland & Gabor Szabo - Gypsy Jam (Sketch For Summer, 1965)
And then a brand new track from the wonderful new Squarepusher album:

5. micronormous - Rainland (The Wire Tapper 20, 2008)
Then it was time for the penultimate section of our recent interview with Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman followed by one of the standout tracks from their new album:
6. Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman - Funky Little Spacegirl (Destination Space, 2008)
Then another track from the new Squarepusher album, this one a wonderfully cheesy slice of vocoder fun:
7. Squarepusher - A Real Woman (Just A Souvenir, 2008)
Then another track from the Keith Mansfield album, this was was first introduced to me by some bloke calles fuz:
8. The Keith Mansfield Orchestra - Boogaloo (All You Need Is Keith Mansfield, 1968)
Last week we played a slice of contemporary exotica from Medeski, Martin and Wood's latest album. Here's another track, this one altogether more prog-esque:
9. Medeski, Martin and Wood - Agmatia (Zaebos: the Book of Angels, Vol. 2, 2008)
Then it was time for the last part of our interview with Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman. We followed this with one of the daftest tracks from the new album which had me laughing out loud when I first heard it:
10. Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman - Kittens on the Moon (Destination Space, 2008)
Followed by another track featuring cats and dogs getting on famously:
11. The Beatle Barkers - We Can Work It Out (The Exotic Beatles Volume 1)

12. Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends - Talk It Over In The Morning (Full Circle)
