The Show On tonight's show we went all Nordic. Why? Well are excited to report that we have our hands on the new album by Aavikko (the Finnish band whose music we use for our theme tune)! However, we are also saddened at the news that our other favourite Finnish retro-futurists Laika and the Cosmonauts have decided to hang up the space helmets. Mind you, they have been making music since 1988. In addition to Finland, we also played Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic tunes. What about Denmark I hear you say? Well, we couldn't find anything from Denmark... In amongst all that we also have news of interest to fans of Delia Derbyshire and the Ghost Box record label. The Music We kicked the show off with a trip to Finland and Sweden respectively: 1. Elevators - No Business (Linoleum, 1997) 2. Jet Set Swe - Spanish Flea (Goodbye Pluto, 2007) Followed by a brief detour to much sunnier climes in the form of another track from the great new album from Mulatu Astatke and the Heliocentrics: 3. Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics - Live from Tigre Lounge (Inspiration Information 3, 2009) And next up one of the main reasons for going all Nordic this evening, a track from the great new album from Finnish band Aavikko: 4. Aavikko - Computopia (Novo Atlantis, 2009) Back to Sweden and on to Iceland: 5. Komeda - Binario (What Makes It Go?, 1998) 6. Emilíana Torrini - Jungle Drum (Single, 2009) Another detour, this time to mark the 70th birthday of Lee Majors, who these days is producing his own "bionic" hearing aid: 7. John Gregory & His Orchestra - The Six Million Dollar Man (Six Million Dollar TV Themes, 1976) Then it was time to get back to the theme of the show with a trip to Norway: 8. Bobby Hughes Combination - Magnificent Mr Morgen (Nhu Golden Era, 2003) And then the other main reason for the theme of the show which is the demise of that other great bunch of Finnish retro-futurists, Laika & The Cosmonauts: 9. Laika and the Cosmonauts - Psyko (Instruments of Terror, 1993) And then another Finn we greatly admire, doing a very crunchy version of a tune we greatly admire: 10. Jimi Tenor - Caravan (Intervision, 1997) Now, at the time of the show we reported great news of an installation of Delia Derbyshire's work at the Sensoria festival in Sheffield (plus amazing news of the Radiophonic Workshop doing a live show in London in May): 11. Delia Derbyshire - Mattachin (BBC Radiophonic Music, 1968) Followed by an artist clearly inspired by the work of the BBC Workshop, Julian House, aka The Focus Group. Julian House happens to have an exhibition on in Stirling at the moment and will be coming to Stirling to do a Ghost Box DJ set as part of this year's Le Weekend festival: 13. The Focus Group - We Are All Pan's People (We Are All Pan's People, 2007) And then a cheeky inclusion, the fake Scandinavian sounds of "Ole Jensen and His Music": 14. The Show On tonight's show: we finally got round to celebrating the life of recently departed giant of film soundtrack composition, Maurice Jarre, we played a couple of tracks from the recently released Switched-on Bob, more music from the forthcoming Emperor Machine album, Ethiopian space-jazz courtesy of Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics and lots more besides. The Music We opened the show with a couple of tracks supplied by our charity shop digger-on-chief Fuz: 1. Billy May - St Joe Mo 2. The Brass Menagerie - Hot Pants (Brass Menagerie 1973, 1973) Then it was time for the first of two tracks from a great new collaboration between the master of Ethio-Jazz and vibraphonist, Mulatu Astatke, and London nonet The Heliocentrics: 4. Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics - Cha Cha (Inspiration Information 3, 2009) 5. Cal Tjader - Philadelphia Mambo (Black Orchid, 1956) A new release from one of our followers on Twitter: 6. P.T. Walkley - The Lucky Ones (Mr. Macy Wakes Alone, 2009) 7. Mel Torme - Bonnie & Clyde (The Music Goes Round, 1968) Following the story about Woody Harrelson -v- Zombies (see below) we took the opportunity to play the first of two tracks from a great new compilation of Mooginess: 8. Messer Chups - Zombie in Mini Skirt (Switched ON BOB A Tribute To Bob Moog, 2009) Then it was time for the first of our tributes to the recently departed Maurice Jarre with a track from the second movie he scored back in 1959: 9. Dick Hyman - The Shadow Of Your Smile (Happening!, 1966) We are delighted to have a preview copy of the new Emperor Machine album and played: 11. And another track from Switched-on Bob: 13. The Show On tonight's show: Easter Bunnies, tracks from the new Holden album, something from Mike Batt(!), ukulele, organ, Moog and a couple of tracks from the still-to-be-released new album from The Emperor Machine. The Music We started this Easter show with a brace of bunnies: 1. Metrophonics - Close Up (Charles Wilp: Michelangelo In Space - The Bunny Remixes, 2000) 2. Tipsy - Bunny Kick (Uh-Oh!, 2001) Next up a track from the brand new album by Holden: 3. Holden - Mia (Fantomatisme, 2009) Followed by another piece of French pop - complete with ukulele: 4. Mareva Galanter - C'est Bon (UkuYéyé, 2006) @Mike_Batt started following me on Twitter so to mark this auspicious event we played this next track. Shortly afterwards, he stopped following me on Twitter. I'm not sure if the two are related: 5. Synthesonic Sounds - Superfly (The Easy Project - 20 Loungecore Favourites, 1973) As a certain car manufacturer has decided to use a song by The Free Design to promote their latest vehicle we felt it was time play a song by this wonderful band: 6. The Bran Flakes - Dance Of The Sugarsnap Fairy (I Have Hands, 2008) Following the news of the "surprise" premiere of the new Star Trek movie (see below) we played possibly the only guitar version of the theme tune: 8. The Show Today would have marked the 80th birthday of pioneering producer/engineer/composer Joe Meek if he were still with us. So we played a few tracks by him. We also got our hands on a great new 6-CD set of Tony Hatch albums. So expect some quality Hatch cheese. Stereolab have decided to call it a day (at least for the time being) so we'll remind ourselves just how great a band they were/are. The Music We opened the show with another track from the Moog Cookbook's elusive third album, Bartell: 1. Shonen Knife - Twist Barbie (Moog Cookbook remix) (Bartell) 2. Jonny Trunk - Nest We Forgot (A Psychedelic Guide to Monsterism Island, 2009) There's a great 6-album set of Tony Hatch albums out for a bargain basement price: 3. Tony Hatch & Jackie Trent - Morning Dew (The Two Of Us, 1968) 4. Moe Koffman - Curried Soul As mentioned above, Stereolab have decided to go into hiatus. Hopefully not forever but this news prompted us to feature a couple of our favourite 'lab tracks starting with one from their most recent album: 5. Stereolab - Neon Beanbag (Chemical Chords, 2008) Then it was time for the first of this evening's tracks by Joe Meek who would have turned 80 today if he hadn't really left this dimension: 6. The Tornados - Robot (Joe Meek - The Alchemist Of Pop, 1963) 7. Lloyd Cramer - Let's Go To honour the great Heinz Wolff who is coming to Edinburgh for the Science Festival: 8. Richard Denton & Martin Cook - The Great Egg Race (1979) News of the Orion space capsule (see below) prompted us to play this great Peter Thomas tune: 9. Tätärä - Orion (Next Show, 2000) 10. Geoff Goddard - Sky Men (Joe Meek - The Alchemist Of Pop, 1963) Then it was time for this evening's non-ukulele track: 11. Lonely Drifter Karen - This World Is Crazy (Grass Is Singing, 2008) 12. Tony Hatch & Jackie Trent - Don't Stop Now (The Two Of Us, 1968) 13. Robert Drasnin - Moorean Moonbeams (Voodoo II, 2007) Bat For Lashes is coming to Glasgow in support of her new album. Here's our favourite track from her last album: 14. Bat for Lashes - What's a Girl to Do? (Fur and Gold, 2007) Followed by a track from which I think remains my favourite Stereolab album: 15. Stereolab - Miss Modular (Dots And Loops, 1997) We closed the show with a great track from the soundtrack to the latest Dreamworks movie Monsters vs Aliens: 16.
