The Show
On tonight's show we marked the recent sad passing of the great Ms Eartha Kitt, along with generally nursing our heads after the recent festive season.
The Music
We started our first show of 2009 by wishing everyone a Happy New Year:
1. The Qualities (aka Sun Ra) - Happy New Year To You (Sun Ra: The Singles, 1956/1996)
2009 marks the 30th anniversary of, er, 1979!
2. Coconami - 1979 (Coconami, 2008)
We started our tribute to Eartha Kitt by playing a track which sums her up perfectly - and expresses a sentiment we certainly go along with here on the Moonbase:
3. Eartha Kitt - I Want To Be Evil (Revisited, 1960)
One of the anniversaries we shall be celebrating this year is the 70th birthday of Hammond organist extraordinaire, Brian Auger:
4. Brian Auger - Tiger (Get Auger The Anthology - The Mod Years, 1967)
Our ears recently alighted on a band called Toy who put a wonderful album out back in 2005. If you like Tipsy and Plone you'll certainly like Toy:
5. Toy - Realistic Martian Landing Set (Toy, 2005)
And keeping things electronic and futuristic, we played another track from a great new album by I Am Robot and Proud:
6. I Am Robot And Proud - Uphill City (Uphill City, 2008)
Then it was back to our celebration of the life of Eartha Kitt with one of her strangest songs - sung mostly in Turkish too:
7. Eartha Kitt - Uska Dara (Revisited, 1960)
And we followed that up with some similarly near-eastern sounds courtesy of a Romanian gypsy band:
8. Fanfare Ciocarlia - Caravan (Gili Garabdi, 2005)
Another anniversary we shall be marking is the 80th birthday of film and TV soundtrack composer Stu Phillips. Our friend and London correspondent Jeff kindly furnished me with a Stu Phillips CD as a Christmas gift and it's a great compilation of his late 60s/early 70s film work:
9. Stu Phillips - India - Mahahbalipuram (Surf, Sex And Cycle-Psychos: A Diverse Potpourri Of Antediluvian Film Music By Stu Phillips, 1969/2005)
10. Keith Mansfield - Man With A Mission (When The Saints Go, 2008)
Annother anniversary to put in your diaries is the 90th birthday of the great English jazz pianist, Mr George Shearing. His 1974 album The Way We Are is one of our most cherished albums:
11. George Shearing - Do You Know The Way To San Jose? (The Way We Are, 1974)
Next up, the last of our tributes to the great Eartha Kitt:
12. Eartha Kitt - Mambo de Paree (Santa Baby Greatest Hits, 2008)
Then it was time for another track from the new Tipsy album:
13. Tipsy - Kitty's Daydream (Buzzz, 2008)
Belbury Poly have a new album out at the end of the month - hurrah! And if you pre-order the album you can download the single for free. This next track is one of those very tracks:
14. Belbury Poly - Clockwork Horoscope (From an Ancient Star, 2009)
