PMB023 Shatnoy: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Brett Domino, Keith Kawaii, The Vulcans, John Keating

On the show this week we celebrate the imminent 80th birthday (and therefore automatic entry into the Project Moonbase Hall of Fame) of those two giants of popular culture, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner.

We have "music" by these two gentlemen as well as extensive debate on the merits of each of them (through the medium of Shatner/Nimoy TopTrumps). There are also curious and puzzling arrangements of the Star Trek theme for theremin, musical saw and the ukulele.

In addition to all the Shatnoy, we also have more from Dayton, Ohio, some chiptune and a fabulous keytar medley of Michael Jackson hits by Brett Domino.

Steel Harmony - Transmission

PMB022 Stylophonic: Jerry Allen, Hong Kong in the 60s, Yakuza Heart Attack, Brett Domino, Soulless Party, The Brooklyn Organ Synthesizer Orchestra

We believe in being guided by cosmic forces here at the Moonbase so we coudn't possibly ignore the arrival in the airlock this week of *two* new releases featuring that king of keyboard instruments, the Stylophone. For not only does the long-awaited debut by the Brett Domino Trio dedicate a whole medley to this instrument, but an epically analogue re-interpretation of Tubular Bells also features the instrument prominently. The show is a rather eclectically electronic one this week, with more from the debut album by Hong Kong in the 60s, a track from a new release by listener Soulless Party and a deliciously fresh slice of chip-prog from Yakuza Heart Attack.

But we do also find time for our new regular feature, Classic Steel, for those pining for the tinkling sound of the steel drum.

This week MC Zirconium also believes that ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habits, to have new little hopes. It's rather hard work...

Moogular Bells

Over the last couple of decades, former Psychedelic Furs keyboard player Joe McGinty has been gradually amassing a truly envy-inducing collection of vintage keyboards. To demonstrate some of the classic and bizarre members of this collection, McGinty recently assembled 20 of New York's finest keyboard players to record an arrangement of that often schism-inducing piece of pop-prog, Tubular Bells. Before you run screaming from the drawing room, dear listener, we at the Moonbase feel sure that wherever you stand on Mike Oldfield you will be dazzled and tickled in equal measure by this wonderful performance.
