PMB063: Punk's Not Dead (The Wurzels, Tracy Thornton, Coconami, Bruce Graham, Boop Beep Beep Boop, The Swing Easy Orchestra)

Chiefly inspired by the remarkable discovery of a whole album's worth of punk covers played on the steel drum(!), we decided it was time to dust off the ripped tartan trousers and attach chains of safety pins to our lab coats as we turn the whole show over to punk rock. Please rest assured, dear regular listener, that this is the Alternative History version of punk rock where one can quite happily use the music as a backdrop to the enjoyment of creamy stilton and several glasses of fortified wine.

Those unfeasibly talented gentlemen Peter Serafinowicz and Robert Popper have made a new presentation to celebrate 10 years of Look Around You:

PMB062: Fantastica (Russ Garcia, Spacedog, Jeroen Tel, Polysick, Gianni Rossi, Mr Chop, Noel Boggs, Barry Stoller)

On the show this week we pay a slightly belated tribute to one of the giants of space age bachelor pad music, Russ Garcia, who sadly passed away towards the end of 2011. Garcia had a very illustrious career as an arranger and orchestrator but he is probably best loved for his 1959 album Fantastica which was one of the first space-themed lounge records.

As well as plenty of music from Russ Garcia we also have lots of artists and releases new to us at the Moonbase including, most excitingly, a track from the brand new debut album from friend of the show, Sarah Angliss, and her band Spacedog.

Spacedog: Juice for the Baby

Exciting news reaches the Moonbase that the debut album from friend of the show Sarah Angliss and her band Spacedog, entitled Juice for the Baby, has been released.

The album features Sarah on theremin, saw, robotic carillon, recorder, piano and Max/MSP patches; Jenny Angliss on vocals and Stephen Hiscock on vibraphone, glockenspiel, drums, handbells and other percussion.

It's a darkly beautiful and positively spooky piece of work. In fact might we be bold enough to propose a new word, séantific, to describe this splendid release. We'll be playing a track from the album on the next edition of the show.
